Irvington resident Valeria Mial has been through more health problems than most people will ever experience. A diabetic with neuropathy, she has suffered five strokes, and most recently endured surgical amputation of one of her toes after a bone infection caused significant damage. After the procedure, Valeria came to Alaris Health at West Orange to recover and was not sure that she would ever walk again.
“After two and a half weeks of working with the physical and occupational therapists, the strides I made were incredible. Through faith you can do all things, and this amazing team at Alaris helped me to get here,” says Ms. Mial.
Therapists worked extensively with Ms. Mial to strengthen her upper and lower body and to help her to readjust her weight when walking based on the loss of the toe. Now she is able to walk regularly and only uses the wheelchair when she gets tired.
“Everyone has had such determination to help me recover. In particular, my physical therapist, Winnie, helped to motivate me. She pushed me but also has the love and compassion to balance it. This is the most caring, most devoted staff I have ever seen,” says Ms. Mial.
Now looking forward to going home and reconnecting with her community, she adds, “God orders my steps and I live day by day in a mission to uplift and strengthen others.”
