Survival Training Registration

With the tragic attack in Pittsburgh and California, it behooves us all to be ready a tragedy should occur in our community. Sadly, with a tragedy like these, we cannot wait for help to arrive – we have to know what to do now – you are the FIRST first responder!

We have arranged for Hudson Regional Hospital to present FREE three most practical courses for tragedies like this:

  • Hands-Only CPR
  • Stop the Bleed.
  • Surviving an Active Shooter Event

We ask for registration, as the class size is limited to under 75 adults and teenagers and we are doing smaller training groups during the event.

We do these regularly at Hudson Regional Hospital as our staff needs to be able to help patients.  And HRH also handles all 911 medical calls for Secaucus – the calls come right to EMS.  Here’s a brief summary of the programs…

Hands-Only CPR

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the US. Each year, over 420,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the US.  And that is without a tragedy like that in Pittsburgh or California!  When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.  You may not be able to reach that defibrillator, or your friend just had a heart attack.

According to the AHA, 90 percent of people who suffer out of hospital cardiac arrests do not survive, partially because most Americans (70%) feel helpless to act because they don’t know how to do CPR or are afraid of hurting the victim. Immediate CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival during a cardiac arrest.  It is incumbent on all of us to learn how to perform this vital skill for adults, children, and infants.

Stop the Bleed

Uncontrolled bleeding is a major cause of preventable deaths. Approximately 40 percent of trauma-related deaths worldwide are due to bleeding or its consequences, establishing hemorrhage as the most common cause of preventable death in trauma. The Stop the Bleeding Coalition is focused on raising awareness of how, with the proper training and materials, death from bleeding can be prevented. The Bleeding Control Basic (BCon) Course is designed for individuals who have little or no medical training but who may be called upon as immediate responders to provide initial trauma care and bleeding control to a victim of traumatic injury before the arrival of emergency medical services (EMS).  Remember, you are the FIRST first responder.

Surviving an Active Shooter Event

While you are 700 times more likely to die in a car crash than an active shooter event, safety is about being prepared. The mantra here is “Run-Hide-Fight.” You need to know how to apply these quick actions to improve your chances of survival should you find yourself in proximity to a shooter.  Hudson Regional Hospital has developed an approved Active Shooter program for use with staff and patients.  It is critical that you learn how active shooter situations unfold, how to be situationally aware, and what actions are necessary to improve your odds of survival.

Remember

We are all very nervous because of the tragedies in Pittsburgh and California, and we are all looking at how to protect ourselves and how to react to something as horrific as this. Too often, as time passes by, we forget the tragedy and become a little complacent in our daily lives.  Remember, understanding these three key programs are valuable anytime – if your friend has a heart attack, if one of your boys falls out of a tree and cuts himself causing major blood loss, or when, Heaven forbid, another crazy enters our community.  Be prepared!

Date/Location

It will be taking place on Sunday January 27, 2019 from 10am to 1pm at Alaris Health at the Chateau, located at 96 Parkway, Rochelle Park, NJ. It will be held in the building on your right when you come in. There is free valet parking. A 10-minute drive from Teaneck, a 10-minute drive from Fairlawn and a 13-minute drive from Passaic!

Congratulations to Rodolfo Rodriguez our Food Service Director at Alaris Health at Essex on winning the Oscar de la Renta Immigrant Award

Rodolfo Rodriguez, deputy mayor of West Orange (as well as the Food Service Director at Alaris Health at Essex)

Rodolfo Rodriguez, deputy mayor of West Orange (as well as the Food Service Director at Alaris Health at Essex)

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Rodolfo Rodriguez, deputy mayor of West Orange (as well as the Food Service Director at Alaris Health at Essex), recently received the Oscar De La Renta Immigrant Award, which was presented to him by the President Danilo Medina of Dominican Republic.

The Oscar de la Renta Immigrant Award is considered the most prestigious honor that can be accorded to a Dominican living in the United States. De la Renta is a worldwide icon in the fashion industry and a native Dominican.

“My daughter, Jessica Rodriguez, is a graduate from FIT New York, and she is a huge fan of this man,” said Rodriguez. “When the consul for the tri-state area from New York called me telling me that among his long list of suggested candidates my name kept coming out as one of the top, I told my daughter, and she went really crazy about it and convinced me to be one of the candidates.”

After a long vetting procedure, Rodriguez, who also heads the West Orange Hispanic Foundation, was selected as a finalist.

“This process took more than a year,” said Rodriguez. “They investigate all about you, [request] letters of recommendation from the police, the chief of police and Mayor [Robert] Parisi. Basically my life is investigated.”

The honor is a distinguished one, as only one winner is selected from each participating nation.

“We are 3 million Dominicans spread out all over the world, and they picked one from each country—one from Spain, Italy, Canada and so on,” said Rodriguez. “I am from the USA, where 1,008,000 Dominicans live, and they had a total of 38 Dominicans, one from each country. It was an amazing experience and the greatest satisfaction and honor—plus a great responsibility, because I am what the purpose of this contest is: an example.

“The idea of doing this award is to encourage other immigrants to do well in a foreign country and be an example for those coming on a daily basis. I am honored to say that my wife, Mercedes, and I raised a beautiful family in West Orange [and] worked hard to accomplish what we have today.”

Rodriguez thanked Parisi for believing in him and dedicated this award to his daughter, Jessica, who is in the same field as her hero, de la Renta.

Veterans Day 2018 - Jersey City2Jersey City, NJ, July 3, 2018Alaris Health at Jersey City is honoring its resident veterans on this Veterans Day Holiday. The display was assembled by Alaris Health at Jersey City employee, Ismael Randazzo, an Army National Guard veteran, to show gratitude to those who served in the Armed Forces.  He constructed the respectful, timely , and educational memorial in the main lobby of the facility for all who visit to honor our fellow veteran residents. He also points out that the display honors the veterans of all wars. During an impromptu talk to the residents and staff about the beginnings of Veterans Day, he noted that it was originally known as Armistice Day. It was on the 11th month of the 11th day of the 11th hour that World War I came to a close.  This display formally gives special recognition to the seven residents who served and are honored on this Veterans Day 2018.

Alaris Health at Jersey City Sets Up Voting Poster Board for Residents

IMG_1153Jersey City, NJ, July 3, 2018 – At Alaris Health we believe that voting is an important resident right.  As such, the Social Service Department at Alaris Health at Jersey City, led by Krystle Rodriguez, CSW, and Stacey Heller, LSW, have created an easy to read poster, which was situated in the lobby, at wheelchair height for their residents.

This poster clearly described the officials who are running for office, such as Bob Menendez and Bob Hugin, amongst others, and what their stances are on important matters.  It even displayed the public questions that are posed during this election time.

Krystle and Stacey thought that this poster board would help answer any questions the residents may have had on voting. According to Stacey, “voting is an important resident right. We want to ensure we allow all of our residents to exercise their right to vote”.

Social Service staff all have accompanied residents to the voting area, which was very close in proximity to the facility.

Alaris Health at Jersey City Earns a Perfect, Deficiency-free Survey Result From New Jersey Department of Health

Celebrating Deficiency Free State Survey LogoJersey City, NJ, July 3, 2018 – Dear family, friends & members of our Alaris Health at Jersey City Community,

We are very proud to announce that Alaris Health at Jersey City has earned a perfect, deficiency-free survey result from the New Jersey Department of Health.

The deficiency-free rating as a result of the State’s rigorous examination is a top indicator of excellence for nursing home care. The state surveyed Alaris Health at Jersey City in early June 2018 for quality outcomes, safety, administration effectiveness, cleanliness, nursing care, activity programs, resident rights and several other areas.

Just last September 2017, the New Jersey Department of Health began its extended survey process making this deficiency-free survey even more impressive than many achieved in years passed.

“I am grateful for all the team members in all the departments that put in many hours of preparation for the survey. I especially want to thank the entire nursing department ; the DON, ADON, Unit managers, RNS, LPNS, and the CNAs who care for our residents and who made this outcome possible. We are also indebted to Meg Rizzo, our RNQA, who guided us through the process and who was a hands on consultant for us all.” – Robert Smolin, Administrator at Alaris Health at Jersey City (10 years at Alaris Health).

Alaris Health at The Chateau Administrator Sue Roman Receives Community Award from Rochelle Park Police Department

(Alaris Health at The Chateau Administrator Sue Roman with the award from the Rochelle Park Police Department.)

(Alaris Health at The Chateau Administrator Sue Roman with the award from the Rochelle Park Police Department.)

Rochelle Park, NJ, March 16, 2018Alaris Health is honored to announce that Sue Roman, Administrator at Alaris Health at The Chateau, received an award last month from the Rochelle Park Police Department for her commitment to supporting law enforcement in the community.

Sue was selected for the award because of her and Alaris Health at The Chateau’s ongoing dedication to and partnership with the Rochelle Park Police Department. Rochelle Park Police Chief Robert Flannely said, “Through blizzards, storms or state emergencies, Sue and the team have always opened their doors to us during challenging times. They provide food and medical care to my officers when other facilities are closed.”

While Sue is grateful for having received the award, she said, “Having strong relationships with the pillars in our community is incredibly important. With the Rochelle Park Police Department, it’s a mutual respect that we have for each other, recognizing and honoring the demands of our professions. They protect and serve the community and we strive to do the same with our residents.”

Police Chief Flannely knows first-hand the level of care and dedication the Alaris Health at The Chateau team provides every day, because his mother was a resident there. “She was treated with outstanding care,” he said. “The staff was professional and nurturing. Sue specifically kept me informed in every step of my mother’s care, including involving me in meetings with doctors and staff. Her attention to detail and deep regards for the residents is truly one of her many assets.”
