Sara Medina, Licensed Practical Nurse, has vivid memories of helping out a man who was staying at Alaris Health at Kearny when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In her role as a nurse and unit manager, Ms. Medina sat with this patient, who had few family members, and was trying to absorb the news himself. Being able to be there for him was very gratifying, she relates.
“There is nothing more I enjoy than interacting with patients. Even when you have a difficult day, watching the smiling faces our patients turns your day around. I always wanted to be a nurse and over time I fell in love with this job and caring for our patients,” say Ms. Medina.
This dedication to patients has made Ms. Medina well regarded by the staff. In honor of National Nursing Home Week, May 12-16, Alaris Health at Kearny has chosen to highlight Ms. Medina as an exemplary employee. The American Health Care Association established National Nursing Home Week in 1967 as a week-long observance celebrating the positive impact nursing homes can have on the lives of people. Each Alaris Member Health Center is participating in this celebration and has chosen an employee to highlight.
“Sara is thorough and caring and has great relationships with the physicians and patients. She teaches other nurses and develops ways to monitor and get things done. The staff and families respond well to her caring and strong communication. She is an excellent nurse and deserves to be highlighted,” says Patricia Celecki RN-BC, LNHA, Administrator at Alaris Health at Kearny.
The theme of this year’s National Nursing Home Week is “Team Care: Everyone Pitches in.” The theme recognizes residents and patients in long term and post-acute care settings, the dedicated staff who care for them, and the value of care planning where everyone “pitches in” for optimal outcomes.
“Alaris Health celebrates our employees for improving and enhancing the lives of our patients,” says Avery Eisenreich, President of Alaris Health.
