For Carolyn Williams, clean, neatly folded, fresh laundry has been a way to show concern for the patients at Alaris Health at Jersey City. Each day she cleans their personal laundry, using a bit of bleach to make the whites whiter or just the right dryer cycle to smooth out the wrinkles. All of the clothes are carefully folded or hung in closets, a labor of love for a woman who believes that appearance is still integral to helping a person feel his or her best.
“I do my best to make them feel at home and I clean their clothes like I clean my own. You have to put yourself in their place; I treat them like my family. I visit with them when I put their clothes away and we talk. When I have to go away on vacation they say, ‘Don’t go!’ It makes me happy to make their clothes look so nice and to get to know them,” says Ms. Williams.
This dedication to patients has made Ms. Williams well regarded by the staff. In honor of National Nursing Home Week, May 12-16, Alaris Health at Jersey City has chosen to highlight Ms. Williams as an exemplary employee. The American Health Care Association established National Nursing Home Week in 1967 as a week-long observance celebrating the positive impact nursing homes can have on the lives of people. Each Alaris Member Health Center is participating in this celebration and has chosen an employee to highlight.
“Carolyn Williams is an outstanding employee. She has been with our facility for 33 years in the Laundry department. Carolyn takes great pride in making sure our residents’ clothing is cared for with special attention and returned to them in a timely manner. She will go out of her way to help anyone in need, even if the issue is not laundry-related. She loves her job and all our residents and is well respected within the facility,” says Renee Verrier, Administrator at Alaris Health at Jersey City.
The theme of this year’s National Nursing Home Week is “Team Care: Everyone Pitches in.” The theme recognizes residents and patients in long term and post-acute care settings, the dedicated staff who care for them, and the value of care planning where everyone “pitches in” for optimal outcomes.
“Alaris Health celebrates our employees for improving and enhancing the lives of our patients,” says Avery Eisenreich, President of Alaris Health.
