Alaris Health at HarborView Chooses Employee Julian Duran to Highlight for National Nursing Home Week, May 12-18

Residents at Alaris Health at HarborView look forward to their meal times with great anticipation. Food Service Director Julian Duran likes to say that he is only as good as his last meal. His attention to the presentation and taste of the food, as well as effort to prepare meals that make patients feel like they are at home, have earned him a happy following at HarborView.

“In my opinion, food is everything. For older people who are not going as many places, food becomes one of their primary activities. At HarborView, the meals are the talk of the building. That is why it is so important to me to make food that is not institutionalized, but rather tastes like it has been homemade with care,” says Mr. Duran.

From a monthly Breakfast Club with made-to-order omelets, to holiday parties and quarterly “elegant dining,” Mr. Duran provides varied and tasty menus. He is also conscious of dietary restrictions, making sure that “someone isn’t eating bacon next to someone who can’t, because that’s not enjoyable.”  He constantly searches the Internet for new foods that will please and delight. Knowing that he is improving meals for the patients makes Mr. Duran feel like, “I am doing something positive every day.”

This dedication to residents has made Mr. Duran well regarded by the staff. In honor of National Nursing Home Week, May 12-16, Alaris Health at HarborView has chosen to highlight Mr. Duran as an exemplary employee. The American Health Care Association established National Nursing Home Week in 1967 as a week-long observance celebrating the positive impact nursing homes can have on the lives of people. Each Alaris Member Health Center is participating in this celebration and has chosen an employee to highlight.

“Julian Duran is an outstanding employee. He has been with the organization for many years and has worked hard to become a director. Since becoming Food Service Director at Harbor View, Julian has created positive changes in our food service. He cares very much about the presentation and quality of food that is served, and meeting residents’ dietary needs as well as creating meals they enjoy,” says Kevin Woodard, , Administrator, Alaris Health at HarborView.

The theme of this year’s National Nursing Home Week is “Team Care: Everyone Pitches in.”  The theme recognizes residents and patients in long term and post-acute care settings, the dedicated staff who care for them, and the value of care planning where everyone “pitches in” for optimal outcomes.

“Alaris Health celebrates our employees for improving and enhancing the lives of our patients,” says Avery Eisenreich, President of Alaris Health.
