Esther Waldman Celebrates her 100th Birthday on September 6 at Alaris Health at The Atrium

Esther Waldman, a resident at Alaris Health at The Atrium, turned 100 years old on September 6, and she was determined to blow out all of the candles on her cake by herself.  The staff and residents, along with the Deputy Mayor of Jersey City,  joined in a festive birthday bash for Esther at Alaris Health at The Atrium.

Esther is not alone in her ranks as a centenarian at Alaris Health at The Atrium.  Alice Mospak proudly ranks higher at 104 years old, so Esther has some catching up to do.  We are thrilled to help her celebrate this impressive milestone,” says Sue Roman, Administrator.

Esther was born on September 9, 1913, in New York City, to Frannie and Harry Waldman and was fortunate to have three sisters and one brother.  She moved with her family to New Jersey when she was six years old where she remained for the rest of her life.  Esther attributes her longevity to “a strong work ethic” and is grateful for her job at a law firm where she worked as a legal secretary until her retirement.

It was at this law firm that she developed a friendship with a female co-worker, and together they travelled the world.  Esther says, “I have seen the whole world but my favorite place is London.”  She also takes great pride in having met Queen Elizabeth while traveling on a ship.

In addition to her interesting job, Esther says that her extended family of 50 relatives has given her strength and support, and the family stays in close touch.  Esther keeps her mind busy by reading books and gaining new information. Although she regrets never having children, her many nieces and nephews bring joy to her life.

The attractive and spacious Atrium offers many amenities to its residents.  To schedule an appointment or for any additional information about Alaris Health at The Atrium, please call 201-716-8000.

Trip to Turtle Back Zoo Delights residents at Alaris Health at Belgrove

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! The residents at Alaris Health at Belgrove recently enjoyed an outing to the Turtle Back Zoo, West Orange.  Despite the warm weather, the staff and residents kept cool in the shade while watching animals that included cougars, jaguars, red pandas, kangaroos, tortoises and prairie dogs.  A large peacock displayed his colorful plumage right next to the group, a brilliant display for the residents.

“It was a very nice day.  The lions were all walking around together.  It was my first visit to a zoo,” said Manny Silva, who was reminded of the cats he had as pets as he watched the lions.

The staff made sure to position the residents as close to the glass windows as possible.  Many animals, including the bears and wolves and one very friendly sea lion, walked or swam up to the glass and rubbed it, to the delight of the group.

For Clementine Gaskell, the outing reminded her of trips that she took to the zoo with her children when they were small.  She reminisced about the changes to the zoo from years past.  “We really enjoyed ourselves and I was so glad that I went,” she added.

The recreation staff at Alaris Health at Belgrove plans many outings and activities for residents to enjoy.

“For many of them, going to the zoo was a totally new experience. We have pet therapy on site, but this was a chance to experience animals that most people would not normally see.  The most important part is getting the residents back into the community again,” says Justin Kulp, CTRS,  Recreation Director.
