Everything is Blooming at the Vegetable and Flower Garden At Alaris Health at The Atrium

Every year  residents at Alaris Health at The Atrium (Assisted Living) plant and care for their garden on the second floor patio.  They take much pride in their beautiful garden, which is shared by all residents as a place of peace and harmony.  Both Amelia Kiley and Joseph Mason, who reside at the facility, enjoyed digging the dirt and planting the vegetables and begonias.  When the juicy beef steak tomatoes are ripe, residents will savor a salad with home grown parsley, basil and tomatoes.  Until then, residents are enjoying the fresh mint from the garden in iced tea served daily at coffee and tea time. During this hot weather Amelia and Joseph are busy watering daily, but it is worth the effort as shown by the expressions of joy on their faces.

Residents at Alaris Health at The Atrium Beat the Heat

When the heat is on, the residents and staff at Alaris Health at The Atrium, an Assisted Living facility, know how to stay cool and enjoy the summertime. Residents beat the sweltering summer heat with refreshing, exotic, cold beverages and fine Chinese cuisine in the comfortable, cool ambiance of P.F. Chang’s restaurant.

“From start to finish, the trip resulted in all smiles and no perspiration even as temperatures heated up outside in the high 90’s. Once inside the well air conditioned establishment, our residents found themselves engaged in the real challenge of the day, which was how to get those tasty morsels to their mouths with chop sticks. It was the perfect way to enjoy the summer,” says Sue Roman, Administrator.

The CDC reports that seniors are more prone to heat stress than younger people. Seniors do not adjust as well as young individuals to sudden changes in temperature. With this in mind, Alaris Health at The Atrium plans a summer filled with cool outings and activities that refresh residents, adds Ms. Roman.

Resident at Alaris Health at The Fountains South Celebrates 102nd Birthday with a Special Party

In 1911, the year of Grace Russo’s birth, Orville Wright remained in the air for 9 minutes and 45 seconds in a glider at Kill Devil Hills, NC, setting a new world record. Now, 102 years later, Ms. Russo recently celebrated her birthday in an era when more than 19,000 airplanes are in the skies over the U.S. each day. On July 31, Ms. Russo enjoyed her milestone birthday at Alaris Health at The Fountains South, where she has been a resident for four years.

Ken Wessler, the manager of Muhlenberg Gardens in Jersey City where Ms. Russo was a former resident, organized her party for the fourth straight year. Mr. Wessler arranged a bus to transport friends, food from Podewitz’s Deli, balloons, flowers and the birthday cake to The Fountains.

“A reunion with her friends and to be the focus of such a unique event was truly a thrill for Grace. Her family, including her great, great grandchildren, was also present for the celebration. It was a very special acknowledgement of her 102nd birthday,” says Pat Meyers, Associate Administrator of Alaris at The Fountains.

Ms. Russo has been a lifelong resident of Jersey City and worked for over fifty years as a seamstress in a garment factory.  While she lived at Muhlenberg Gardens, Ms. Russo was an active community member who always volunteered to cook for bake sales or plan parties such as the annual Oktoberfest.

“She was absolutely involved in everything, even in her 90s. Grace’s hand would go up before I even asked for volunteers. She was a vital part of our community for years and made many friends who were delighted to reconnect for her birthday. And Grace was so pleased to see her friends gathered.  She said to me, ‘This is a sight I will never forget. If I never see another sight for the rest of my life, this is enough for me,’” says Mr. Wessler.

This facility, located in Secaucus, offers a warm, supportive and uplifting environment for post-hospitalization rehabilitation patients and long-term residents alike. For more information about the event, please call (201) 526-8700.

Alaris Health at Harbor View Celebrates Flag Day

Alaris Health at Harbor View recently celebrated Flag Day with a flag folding ceremony.  The residents learned the proper way to fold the American flag, as well as the symbolism behind each of the 13 folds.   Additionally, they discovered more about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance, which was originally composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892 and adopted by Congress in 1942.

The Uniformed Services performs flag folding ceremonies as an uplifting way to honor the flag on special days, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  It is an Army and Navy custom to lower picture of justin bieber opts to put on his shades while waiting for Space Mountain to start on Wednesday night (August 6) at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. the flag daily at the last note of retreat. No part of the flag touches the ground during this service. The final step is to fold the flag into the shape of a tri-cornered hat, emblematic of the hats worn by colonial soldiers during the war for Independence.

“It was a great afternoon of American education and tradition,” said Kevin Woodard, Administrator.
